September 2025 Sugar Market News
Kenya’s sugar industry recorded a slower performance in September 2025, with declines in sugarcane milling, sugar production, and miller sales compared to August. Most operational mills posted lower output during the month, although Muhoroni Sugar Company (2025) and South Nyanza Sugar Company registered improvements. The decline also reflected the continued closure of several mills, which has contributed to reduced national output over the year.
Molasses production also fell during the month, although sales increased slightly and closing stocks declined. At the same time, molasses prices rose sharply, pointing to tighter supply conditions in the by-products market.
Market prices showed mixed movement in September. Ex-factory sugar prices remained largely stable, wholesale prices increased slightly, while retail sugar prices eased marginally. Sugarcane prices remained unchanged at Kshs. 5,750 per tonne, in line with the minimum set price.
On the trade front, sugar imports declined significantly from the high levels recorded in August, while sugar exports also fell. Molasses exports remained inactive, though small volumes of molasses imports were recorded. Globally, sugar prices weakened further in September, reflecting softer international market conditions and expectations of a global surplus.
