August 2025 Sugar Market News
Kenya’s sugar industry experienced a modest slowdown in August 2025, with declines recorded in sugarcane milling, sugar production, and miller sales across most operational factories. Total cane milled and sugar output both dropped slightly compared to July, reflecting reduced activity in several mills, although a few factories such as Kibos, Sukari, and West Valley showed improved performance. Notably, Muhoroni Sugar Company resumed operations during the month, offering some positive momentum.
In contrast, molasses production increased, indicating improved recovery from processed cane. However, molasses sales declined, leading to a build-up in closing stocks.
Market prices showed a downward trend, with reductions observed in ex-factory, wholesale, and retail sugar prices. This easing of prices suggests improved availability in the market compared to previous months.
On the trade front, sugar imports rose significantly to bridge domestic supply gaps, while molasses exports remained inactive during the month. Small volumes of molasses imports were recorded, mainly from Uganda.
Globally, sugar prices remained relatively stable, continuing the trend observed in recent months and reflecting balanced international market conditions.
