- Erect spindle leaves
- Emergence of smut whips
- Profuse tillering forming grass like stalks
Management
- Regularly rogue the infected stools.
- Growing resistant and moderately resistant varieties eg D8484,KEN 00-5873
- Use of high quality seed from a certified nursery
- Hot water traetement of seedcane
- Sett treatment with fungicides(carbendazim)
- Roguing and burning of smut whips before they open
